‘황우석’ 이슈로 난리법석이네요.


기억에 남는 수업이 있는데요, 뭐냐하면, ‘Biased / Unbiased Training’ 입니다. 영국이라고 특별히 배우는 것도 아닌 ‘상대방 입장 훈련’정도의 내용입니다. (특별히 영국과 그리 관련있어보인다는건 아님) 아무튼 그 연습을 한 일주일 내내 주제로 삼아서 진행한 적이 있었는데, 복잡한 건 아니구요,

‘공개처형에 반대하냐…마냐’ 등의 웬지 심각한 주제를 설정해놓고 우선 자기 입장을 확실하게 정한 후 세미나를 진행합니다. 막상 세미나에서 발언할 때는 이미 정했던 자신의 원래입장과 정 반대의 입장에서 토론을 진행하게 됩니다. 아이디어로만 생각해보다 직접 해보니 생각외로 흥미진진해졌습니다. 당연히 상대방의 입장에 대한 많은 이해가 뒤따르게 되었구요. 그야말로 ‘남 생각좀해..’라던지, ‘내입장이 되어봐봐.’와 같은 경험이 되는 것이죠. 책 몇권 읽어보면서 진리를 발견할수는 없는 것 처럼, 자신의 생각만 되풀이하면서 갇혀버리게 되면 어쩌나 하는 생각이 들고 그랬습니다.쉬운 일은 아닌 듯 합니다. 나를 바라보는 일, 치우치지 않는 일.. 정말 뭔가를 공부하기에 앞서 해결해야 할 작업이란 생각도 들고요.

이곳에 와서 지내는 한국인들, 중국인들, 스페인인들, 대만인들, 일본인들에 이르기까지, 만나본 사람들 나름대로 느끼는 인종적 선입견들도 참 많습니다. 다들 이곳에서 오래들 산다기보다는 잠깐 살다 나갈 사람들이다보니, 생활하다 어떤 문제에 부딛히면 문제의 쟁점을 인종적 차이로 돌리게 되는… 누가 꼭 죽고 다쳐야 인종문제가 생기는 것이 아니라 잠재적인 차별은 차별 당하는 사람조차도 항상 가지고 있다는 생각이 듭니다.

황우석씨 관련 내용으로 전국이 난리법석인 것으로 보입니다. 정말 없어지기를 바라는 ‘네이버 뉴스’를 꼬박꼬박 살펴보다보니 그렇게 되더군요. -_-, 이런 종류의 ‘모여있는 것 보기’는 편하긴 하지만 정말 위험한 일이죠. 아카이브마 도서관마다도 특유의 시각이 있다면서 조심하면서 신중한 자료찾기를 권하던 어느 상급학생의 말도 생각났습니다.

이사갑니다.

하숙집 방 값이 만만치가 않습니다. 밥값이라도 줄여야 하는 신세가 되다보니 이번달을 마지막으로 이사를 계획했습니다. 그래서 몇주전부터 새로 살 집, 아니 ‘방’을 알아봤었는데, 마침 나온 좋은 방을 얻게 되어서 계약을 했고 이번주에는 잠깐이나마 정들었던 이 집을 떠나야 할 듯 합니다.

지금 살고있는 집의 주인아저씨의 성은 Mans Bridge입니다. 이름은 Steve. 뭔가 다리와 연관이 있을듯한데요, 그래서인지 집 앞에는 런던가는 기차가 지나가는 굴다리가 있습니다.

첫 날에 도착해서 처음 알게된 것은 주인아저씨가 부엌에 못들어간다는 사실과, 아주머니가 감자를 참 좋아하시는구나… 하는 거였습니다. 메쉬포테이토라고 하는 정체불명의 하얀 물체를 보고 당황했던 것이 엇그제인데 이제는 없어서 못먹는 것이 되었습니다. 배고프니 별것이 다 맛있습니다. 후추와 소금만 있다면 세상에 못먹을 것이 없을 것 같습니다. ‘후추’란 양념에 왜 유럽사람들이 광분했던 건지 조금 알것같기도 하고 그렇습니다. 아무튼 주인아저씨처럼 저도 부엌의 경계를 넘어본 일이 없습니다.

우리 주인아저씨 스티브는 한국전 때 영국군으로 참전했던 사람입니다. 영국 땅에 와서 생각지도 않던 한국전 참전군인을 만나게 되었을 때, 그냥 저절로 수고하셨겠구나.. 하는 생각이 들어 땡큐를 연발했었습니다. 저희 부모님이 이걸 아신다면 윤호가 영국가서 철들었구나 하시겠죠. 누군가는 당연히 전쟁히 필요하다고 하듯, 심각한 고민 없이 전쟁을 반대해야 한다고 생각했었지만, 내나라에서 생사를 건 경험을 했다는 실제인물을 보니 저절로 그렇게 되어버렸습니다. 생각으로야 뭘 못하겠습니까. 그동안 말만 신나게 해왔던 것에 대해서 다시 생각해봐야겠다 싶었습니다. 아무튼 주인아저씨가 전쟁을 싫어하는 이유는 정치적인 것도 아니고 경제적인 것도 아니었습니다. 자신은 운 좋게도 살아왔지만 한국이라는 나라에서 저세상으로 간 친구들이 참 많다는 겁니다.

아무튼 아저씨와 같이 살면선 돈 얘기도 (물가가 너무 비싸다보니 그렇겠죠.) 정말 많이 들었습니다. 언젠가 영국의 한 노파가 주민세를 안내고 버티다가 감옥에 가게 되자 신문과 뉴스에 그 이야기가 연일 보도된 적이 있었는데, 그 때가 가장 절정이었던 듯 합니다. 한국을 나서기 전 들었던 말대로, 사람 손이 간 모든 것들이 참 비쌉니다. 피쉬엔 칩은 피쉬엔 익스펜시브..라고 해야 적당할 듯 하고, 대형 수퍼마켓들은 장보는 사람들로 넘치는 반면에 작은 가게들은 모두 죽어가는 분위깁니다. 이런건 한국보다는 이미 훨씬 진행이 더 된 상태인것같습니다. 지방도시인 이곳에도 수많은 수퍼스토어들이 성업중이니까요.

등등,, 정말 많습니다.

아저씨는 가디언 대신 선데이미러나 아거스라는 지방지를 즐겨봅니다. 제가 한번은 구경삼아 가디언 일요판을 사간적이 있는데, 아저씨는 ‘이 신문은 비즈니스맨들이 보는거야. 난 워커라서이런건 안봐.’라고 하시더군요. 정말 상반되는 것이, 한국에서는 금기에 속하는 계급에 대한 언급이 이곳에서는 공공연하게 일반적으로 대화속에 많이 포함된다는 겁니다. 아저씨의 말 처럼 말이죠. 한국서도 중산층이나 서민이라는 말들을 하긴 하지만 ‘나 서민이라서 이거 안봐.’라거나 ‘저 학교는 주로 중산층들이 다니는 곳이야.’라는,,, 등의 얘기들을 그냥 하지는 않으니까요.

안그래도 해변가의 눈부신 하얀 절벽(화이트클립) 바로 옆에는 유명한 사립학교가 있습니다. 건물이나 환경이 정말 눈부십니다. 그 학교에 한국의 로열패밀리들이 많다는 얘기를 아저씨에게서 들었습니다. 블레어는 미들클래스이지만 노동당수로서 워킹클라스인 척 하면서 살아가고, 내가 다니는 학교의 한 교수는 자기 집안이 부유한 정치가문이었지만 좌파집안인 탓에 큰 저택에서 살면서도 불을 안피우고 살았다는 등의 약간은 낮선 얘기를 들었습니다. 저택에서 살지만 불을 안피우는 좌파운동가라…., 계급을 드러내는 것을 꺼리지 않는 것도 신기했지만, 그런 차이에 의한 계급간의 반목과 같은 것을 찾기 힘들다는 것 등등이 저에겐 참 생소합니다.

‘서울 사람들은 지금 어떻게 살고있니?라고 저에게 아저씨가 물었을 때, 전 그냥 열심히 살고있는 아저씨에게 실망을 주지 않기 위해서 약간 부정적으로 답했습니다. ‘잘들 살지만 아직 어려운 사람들이 더 많다’고 말이죠. 솔직하게 생각해본다면 지금 살고있는 이곳 또한 달동네여서인지, 예전의 월곡동 사람들처럼 삽니다. 쪼그만 집에 오래된 가구들, 모든 것들이 너무 오래 된지라 거의 매주마다 이것 저것 직접 수리하면서 살아갑니다. 수리공을 부르는 건 엄두도 못내지요.

‘A third of pubs’ to open longer

About one-third of all the pubs, clubs and shops in England and Wales licensed to sell alcohol are to get longer opening hours, BBC research suggests.
New licensing laws which allow pubs to apply for 24-hour drinking in some areas come into force at midnight.

Of the 375 licensing authorities surveyed, 301 responded in full. Researchers found 60,326 outlets will now be able to sell alcohol for longer.

But so far only a fraction – 359 pubs and clubs – will get 24-hour licences.

Licensing Minister James Purnell said the new laws would be coupled with the “toughest ever crackdown on alcohol fuelled violence”.

A rise in the number of arrests could be a measure of the success of powers in the Licensing Act, he said.

Mr Purnell told BBC Radio 4′s Today programme: “We are not saying that crime itself will go up.

Let’s not penalise the majority of responsible drinkers because of the crimes of a minority _ James Purnell, Licensing Minister

“What we are saying is that we are giving the police more powers and we do expect there to be more prosecutions.”

Mr Purnell added that premises which sell to underage youngsters will be putting their licence at risk – and he stressed that this would include supermarkets.

“It is absolutely clear that the current system has not worked,” said the minister.

“Let’s not penalise the majority of responsible drinkers because of the crimes of a minority.

“There should be a very clear principle here – that if people are not causing harm to others, government should get out of their personal lives.”

The authorities who responded to the BBC survey said:

There have been 60,326 extensions in hours for selling alcohol.

1,121 establishments will have 24-hour licences and of these 359 are pubs or clubs.
The survey results come after ministers warned that the introduction of more relaxed licensing laws on Thursday is likely to lead to an increase in alcohol related arrests.

Shadow culture secretary Theresa May said the logic of the government’s plans was “absurd”.

She told BBC News: “The government has got it the wrong way round.

“They should have been doing something about binge drinking before looking at extending the licensing hours.”

‘Urban myth’

Mrs May said it was of “great concern” that a “significant number, if not a majority” of premises that would have 24-hour drinking were supermarkets and petrol stations, which she said were often frequented by underage drinkers.

She concluded that the change “will lead to more disorder”, adding that “government ministers have accepted that there will be more crime as a result of these laws”.

But Mark Hastings from the British Beer and Pub Association welcomed the changes.

He said: “We’ve been saying for a long time that the result of this change would be a relatively modest increase in overall licensing hours, that 24-hour opening was an urban myth, and certainly 24-hour drinking would be an urban myth.

“What we’re actually seeing is that at last in this country adults are going to be treated like grown-ups and given a little bit of choice about having a social life beyond 11 o’clock at night.”

S Korea plans to withdraw one-third of troops from Iraq

Seoul, Nov. 18.(AP): South Korea plans to bring home about one-third of its troops from Iraq next year, the Defense Ministry said Friday.
Defense Minister Yoon Kwang-ung reported the plan to withdraw about 1,000 troops from Iraq to the ruling Uri Party on Friday, the ministry said. About 3,200 South Korean troops are stationed in northern Iraq to help rehabilitate the country, making Seoul the second-largest U.S. coalition partner contributing forces after Britain.

The announcement comes a day after South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun met U.S. President George W. Bush in the South Korean city of Gyeongju, where the leaders insisted their countries’ alliance was strong and agreed to work together to curb North Korea’s nuclear weapons ambitions.
South Korea’s move caught the White House by surprise. “They have not informed the United States government of that,” said National Security Council spokesman Frederick Jones.
Jones said Roh didn’t raise the subject of troop withdrawals with Bush when they met Thursday in Gyeongju.
“This issue was not raised,” Jones said. “Just the opposite.”
He said Bush expressed appreciation for the South Korean troops and Roh expressed pride in the accomplishments of the South Korean forces.

Ex-MI5 boss raps ‘useless’ ID cards

The Government is coming under pressure to rethink its plans for identity cards after a former security service boss warned they would not make Britain any safer from terrorists.

The ex-director general of MI5 Dame Stella Rimington said she did not believe her former agency is pressing for the introduction of ID cards, and she warned they would be “absolutely useless” unless they could be made unforgeable.

Her comments led to calls from opposition parties and civil liberties groups for the Government to abandon the scheme, which the Home Office estimates will cost ?5.8bn, while critics claim the bill could reach ?40bn.

Shami Chakrabarti, director of Liberty, said Dame Stella’s comments were “yet another nail in the coffin of the massive identity card folly”.

Speaking to the Association of Colleges annual conference in Birmingham, Dame Stella, who retired as head of MI5 in 1996, said: “ID cards have possibly some purpose. But I don’t think that anybody in the intelligence services, particularly in my former service, would be pressing for ID cards.

“My angle on ID cards is that they may be of some use but only if they can be made unforgeable – and all our other documentation is quite easy to forge.

“If we have ID cards at vast expense and people can go into a back room and forge them they are going to be absolutely useless.

“ID cards may be helpful in all kinds of things but I don’t think they are necessarily going to make us any safer.”

Dame Stella’s remarks came as ministers suffered a defeat in the House of Lords on their controversial ID card legislation.

Peers backed a Tory amendment to ensure that only those who reasonably required proof should be entitled to ask for verification of identity.
